Five reasons I would like to freelance for the Journal.ie.
1. Bringing the Journal into exciting new markets.
I am going traveling from July 2012. I believe travel features are an area that the Journal could explore, in an Ireland affected by mass emigration. Travel articles, photography and in-depth features on Irish emigrants abroad- possibly in mini-documentaries, optimized for the web. I would like to be the person to create this content for the Journal.

2. Experience
As a fledgling journalist, I understand that there may be many applying that have been in the active workforce for longer than I have. I would like to make up for this in hard work, enthusiasm and a desire to learn as much as possible. I want to soak in the experience and learn quick and hard on the job.

3. Enjoyment
I adore all things media. I am one of the lucky people who picked something to do in college that they truly love. I have tried to get as involved as I can in all aspects of journalism- TV, radio, print, online and more. A famous Confucius quote states; “Choose a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life”. I have no problem working long or irregular hours because I enjoy it so much that it doesn’t feel like work.

4. Social Media
I am a social media nut. I love Twitter and online video in particular. I am so used to using social media that it is second nature to tweet, share, blog or +1. I really admire the Journal’s effective use of social media. I think I can feed into this well as I have
a good track record of social media engagement.

5. Opportunity.
I would like the opportunity to work, to gain experience, to make contacts and to contribute, in a real way. I have proven skills in some aspects of journalism and I would like the opportunity to gain experience in others. For example, I would like the chance to have photographs published, as I believe I have a good eye for photography.

My photo (below) was even featured in the Journal.ie’s photo gallery of the student protest in November 2011, after @gavreilly saw the photo on Twitter.
